This is a programme in which a healthy male donates his semen to be used by another man undergoing an Assisted Reproduction Technique. This programme is only open to males between the ages of 21 and 35yrs, should reside within a reasonable distance from the clinic and must be willing to adhere strictly to instructions given.
Since the inception of Assisted Reproduction Techniques, it has been noticed on several occasions that some men have dysfunctions with their semen parameters or do not have sperm cells in their semen and hence require the use of donor sperm for their ART procedures.
What the programme entails
First, the intending donor will undergo some blood tests and semen analysis. This includes – Blood grouping, Genotype, HIV 1&2, Syphilis and Hepatitis; Note that all these tests will be at the hospital’s expense.
Once the results of these tests prove satisfactory, the donor is asked to start.
Will this affect my own fertility?
NO!! The process of sperm production known as spermatogenesis is a continuous process that goes on regularly in the body every 90 days and hence it does not affect the donor’s fertility.
